Head Master's Notices

I hope you all had a restful half-term break and look forward to seeing Third Form parents this evening. Reports and pictures suggest the trips to Paris and Sweden over half term were a great success, and I congratulate the paddlers that took part in the Waterside A Canoe Race.

Next Monday, the Lower and Upper School Rockfests take place: please note that buses will be leaving from School later that day and more details can be found below. The drama production of Pillowman begins on Wednesday evening and I wish the best of luck to the cast and crew.  We also look forward to welcoming Alison Mitchell, next Thursday evening, for her Mercers’ Lecture.

Tomorrow, there are fixtures against Kingswood, Warminster and Clayesmore, while the Rifles Club are off to a practice shoot at Patterdown.

I wish you all a good weekend, and would lastly like to bring a notice below to your attention. Thanks to the generosity of some of our parents, we have been offered an opportunity for our pupils to receive heart screening here at Dauntsey's. If you are interested please see the CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) notice for further information.

Summer Term 2019

Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards
Thursday 25 April 2019

Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards is Great Britain’s first Olympic Ski Jumper. He was ranked 55th in the world which qualified him as the only GB applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. With the UK firmly backing the plasterer from Gloucestershire, Eddie competed in the 70m and 90m jump events, but came last in both events.

Although he did not win an Olympic medal, he became famous for his pure determination and ‘have a go’ attitude.

Eddie is a commentator for programmes such as ITV’s ‘The Jump’ and has taken part in TV shows including Sport Relief and the celebrity diving show ‘Splash’ which he won. He returned to ski jumping in 2015 to raise funds for Ski4Cancer, a charity of which he is patron. A film about his life was released in 2016, staring Taron Egerton as Eddie and Hugh Jackman as his trainer.

We anticipate that this will be a popular lecture, and would like all parents to have the first opportunity to reserve their seats. Please make sure that you have booked online here.

Careers

Post Dauntsey's Planning for Lower Sixth Pupils & Parents
Saturday 2 March, 11:00 - 12:30 in the Memorial Hall

The Careers department will outline options open to pupils for when they leave Dauntsey's. This will include how to identify which route is most appropriate and the selection processes involved.

Work Experience

The Careers department is currently trying to help a number of Fifth and Sixth Form pupils who are seeking Work Experience/Shadowing opportunities. If you, or the company/organisation you work for, are able to offer a placement both the school and the pupil would be incredibly grateful. Placements can be from as little as a day, to a week or more, and are of huge benefit to the individuals concerned. In the past the feedback from the employers has been most encouraging, not least because they too have found the placement very worthwhile. If you would like to know more about the process, to see if it might be something you could assist with, then please contact James O’Hanlon j.ohanlon@dauntseys.org or Carrie Watson c.watson@dauntseys.org in the Careers Department.

Romania Charity Auction and Dinner

Saturday 23 March, 19:00 - 22:00

For this year’s event we will not be selling individual tickets, as in the past, but rather the chance to purchase a table for up to ten people for the very reasonable price of £100. This represents a big saving on recent years so please do pick up the phone, ring around and book yourself a table for what promises to be a fantastic and entertaining evening.

For further information please read the attached. To book a table please contact Chris Tonkiss on c.tonkiss@dauntseys.org

Lower School Notices and Reminders

Manor Matters

The Manorites have taken full advantage of the recent beautiful weather and have enjoyed playing outside every evening this week; football has been the favoured activity by many, including the staff, although a black eye from a rogue elbow on the pitch ended the evening rather earlier than anticipated for one member of the tutor team!

The House was filled with the smell of cookies last night as our Lower Sixth Prefects organised some baking after Prep, and everyone appreciated their efforts at tea today. This weekend sees a weekend ‘in House’, where we will be playing table tennis, baking, and running a shopping trip to Devizes.
Anne Sampson, House Mistress.

Please do follow us on Twitter @ManorDauntseys to keep up to date.

Lower School Wide Game and BBQ

Tuesday 5 March, 17:30 - 20:00 at the Manor

On Tuesday, 5 March, from 17:30 - 20:00, there will be a Wide Game and BBQ for all Lower School pupils.
A wide game is an outdoor activity, usually between two or more teams which have to achieve specific objectives in order to win the game. This might be simply preventing the other team(s) from finishing or collecting certain items. Wide games are organised within a given geographical area and usually have a theme or storyline which helps set the scene. Apart from having fun, wide games provide an opportunity for the participants to develop teamwork, planning skills, endurance, resourcefulness, initiative, and physical fitness!

Further information can seen here, and if you would like your son and/or daughter to attend this activity please could you kindly confirm this via email to e.conidaris@dauntseys.org by end of day today. Many thanks.
