Head Master's Notices

Many of our Fifth Form pupils have been back in this week to take part in post-GCSE courses, after a few days off, and I have really enjoyed seeing pictures from the Jurassic Adventure and Life Skills aboard the Jolie Brise. Meanwhile, the Third Form have been preparing for their Ball this evening, as they get ready to say goodbye to the Lower School and their current Houses before September.

The last Saturday of the Summer Term sees fixtures against Bryanston, Devizes Tennis Club and King Edward VI School, Southampton. In addition, boys’ and girls' tennis teams will be taking part in our internal Davis Cup and I would like to wish the best of luck to our Lower Sixth pupils taking on the Brecons Challenge on Sunday.

Our bi-annual Summer Festival returns next week; officially opening at 14:00 on Monday, with the Summer Art Exhibition in the Art School opening at 17:30. There are further details below and I hope to see many of you there, enjoying the great selection of events that pupils and staff have organised.

I do hope that all of our pupils enjoy their final week of school before a well-deserved Summer break and I look forward to seeing many of you at Speech Day and Prize Giving.

Summer Festival 2019

The third bi-annual Summer Festival makes a very welcome return in July bringing to an end a busy and highly successful academic year here at Dauntsey’s. We hope that everyone will enjoy this celebration of the arts and sport before they head off for the summer holidays.

There will be many events, ranging from jazz to classical music, dance to plays as well as exhibitions from some
academic departments. Each day will conclude with “music from the tent,” which has always been a delightful and social end to each Festival day.

Parents, friends and visitors are all most welcome; there will be something for everyone!

GCE results will be available by 09:00 on Thursday 15 August.
GCSE results will be available by 09:00 on Thursday 22 August.

Results will be released to all students via their school e-mail accounts, which will be kept open until the end of September, for all those leaving the school at the end of this term.

Please ensure you have changed and know your password, before the end of term, for your school e-mail accounts. Please also ensure your mail-box is not full. If you are unsure please contact IT Support who will be able to help you.

I will be available in the exams office from Monday 12 August and then throughout the remainder of August to help with results and post-results queries. I can be contacted on examsmanager@dauntseys.wilts.sch.uk or 01380 814677. Next Years' Nominated Charity

Does anyone have a connection to an overseas charity?

We are looking for a long-list of charities to present to the Charity Reps next year. They will then vote for a short list of three, and these will be put to a whole school vote.

Many thanks.

Mouthguards

Your child may be taking part in Rugby or Hockey during the year and following the advice of the Rugby Football Union and Hockey Associations it is compulsory that all pupils participating in these sports should wear a mouthguard; we would highly recommend that this is fitted professionally.

Therefore, in the interest of your child’s safety, we have invited OPRO, a dental organisation that specialises in mouthguards, to visit the School on Monday 1 July for the Lower School pupils, and Tuesday 2 July for the Upper School pupils. This will give everyone, including wearers of fixed braces, the opportunity to have a dentally fitted mouthguard at a reasonable cost. If your child already has a mouthguard please check if it still fits as this is an important factor in ensuring its effectiveness.

Please read the attached opt-out letter for Lower School Parents
Please read the attached opt-in letter for Upper School Parents

May Bank Holiday

As you are probably aware the Government have recently announced that they will be moving the early May Bank Holiday in 2020 from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May, so that the country can commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.  Therefore we will also be making alterations to our Exeat arrangements at that point next year.

School will now be open as normal over the weekend of 2 to 4 May (this was previously published as an Exeat); and instead the Exeat will now start at 17:30 on Thursday 7 May (or after sporting commitments if there are fixtures that day), and conclude on the evening of Sunday 10 May (for the boarders) and the morning of Monday 11 May (for the day pupils). The boarding houses will remain open for the night of Thursday 7 May if any pupils need to stay until the following morning.

The Open Morning that was planned for Saturday 9 May will be moved forward by a week to Saturday 2 May, and there will be no sports fixtures on the afternoon of Saturday 9 May.

Looking at the provisional examination schedule for next Summer’s examinations, it would appear likely at this stage that Study Leave for the Fifth Form will probably start at the same time as the Exeat commences (at 17:30, or after the conclusion of sporting fixtures, on Thursday 7 May).  Study Leave for the Upper Sixth is likely to start at 17:30 on Friday 15 May.  These two dates will be confirmed once the schedules are approved by the Examination Boards and JCQ (the Joint Council for Qualifications).

Amended Term Dates can be viewed here.

Lower School Notices and Reminders

Manor Matters

The Manor opened its doors to welcome our new First Form pupils for a sleepover last Saturday, and we were fortunate that the sun finally decided to shine. Everyone enjoyed some fun on the waterslide before choosing to play football, bake delicious cupcakes, or watch a film; after a busy evening, everyone went off to bed happy, if somewhat weary!

On Sunday, our current First and Second Form boarders joined all of the new pupils at School for an activity-packed day; they enjoyed Segways, extreme trampolining, sumo-wrestling and, importantly, some lovely friendships were formed – the Manorites all returned to The Manor at the end of the day feeling very excited about the prospect of new pupils joining us in September.

This week we have enjoyed spending more time outside in the sun: prep time has been shortened, the waterslide has been in continuous use, and the ‘Manor Dash’ provided an opportunity for Monty V and Issy M to show off their speed, whilst others were able to show off some rather crazy costumes!  In addition, many of the tutor groups have been on their end of year outings for ice-cream, milkshakes or dessert – it has been wonderful to be able to spend time in tutor groups chatting about plans for the holidays and memories that have been made this year.

This weekend we are looking forward to some glitz and glamour at the Third Form Ball this evening, and pupils will be up bright and early on Sunday morning to take part in this year’s ‘Manor Marathon’. Mr Fulling has constructed a very detailed plan of who should be where at 07:30 in the morning, and we hope that some 50 intrepid cyclists and runners will find their way from Bath Abbey to The Manor in time for a BBQ lunch on Sunday.

Next week, many pupils are involved in the Summer Festival, and excitement is mounting for the ‘Surprise Trip’ on Thursday evening…now we just need to work out when our 80 young boarders are going to have time to pack up all of their belongings before they head off for the Summer next Friday!
