Nicole’s heading to the House of Lords

Congratulations to Lower Sixth Former Nicole who has landed a fantastic internship opportunity with Lord Bird, co-founder of The Big Issue and recent Mercers’ Lecture speaker.

Nicole was one of the Sixth Formers who hosted Lord Bird when he visited the school last October, joining the informal supper held prior to the lecture.

I almost didn’t go as I was snowed under with work but I’m so glad I did.  Lord Bird was incredibly inspiring.  He grew up in poverty, with little education and yet, through sheer determination, he transformed his life to become one of the UK’s leading social entrepreneurs and a life Peer.  His mission is to help the most disadvantaged in society, refusing to accept that success is an accident of birth.

I contacted Lord Bird after the lecture and asked him if there were any opportunities to find out more about his work.  We had a meeting, which was followed by an invitation to the House of Lords.  It was so enlightening to hear about his work as a Peer.  He sits as a Crossbencher and focuses on dismantling the root causes of poverty in the UK, with an emphasis on the well-being of future generations.

I was over the moon when a member of his team contacted me to offer a week-long internship in July, where I will shadow Lord Bird, attend meetings and get involved in research.  Lord Bird is passionate about listening to the younger generation, pointing out that, as future leaders, it’s important for our voices to be heard.  He is certainly honouring his ambition by giving me this chance - it’s an amazing opportunity.

Nicole will report back later in the summer after completing her internship.
